The Sodankyla area is underlain by Lower Proterozoic metasediments and metavolcanics. The structure is complex there are two dominant fault zones, the Sodankyla Fault striking N130degreesE and the Kemijarvi Fault striking N150degreesE. The two fault zones intersect to the south of Sodankyla.
Geochemical sampling has established Sodankyla as an extensive gold-bearing area. A comprehensive overview of gold occurances, detailed aeromagnetic data and a review of the entire GTK geochemical database was undertaken by the previous owner of the assets, which was followed by the collection of over 2,300 geochemical samples. This identified four areas of particularly attractive prospectivity for gold, with recent sampling by Conroy producing values ranging up to 117 parts per million gold and returning elevated nickel and chrome values.
Drilling thusfar has established three main lithological types:
The geology is regionally consistent (eg. comparable to the geology of the Pahtavaara deposit also comprising biotite schists and altered komatiites).
